Meet our apprentices
We asked a current apprentice and one who has recently completed why they applied to the Thames Water apprenticeship schemes.
Stephen - Water operations, Farmoor
"After completing my GCSE's, I underwent the Thames Water traineeship.
This gave a 'hands on' approach to learning with the prospect of obtaining a position within the company.
Now having successfully my HNC, I have acquired a post as a multi-skilled ICA technician, hoping to go on and study towards an HND.
Looking back signing up to an apprenticeship was the best possible route to becoming a qualified engineer, with excellent prospects."
Rob Hearne - Design apprentice, Reading
"I was taken on as a Thames Water Design Apprentice in 2006.
I wanted to work for a well established engineering company that offered good training and where I could be involved in large engineering / construction projects, so when I saw the advert I jumped at the opportunity.
The first year consisted of attending a full time BTEC course in both the practical and the theory of Engineering.
This provided the basics to build on when I started in my placement in the Thames Valley design team.
I continue to attend college one day a week to complete my National Certificate but the rest of the time I am working as part of the design team.
It really suits me as I learn a lot more by getting stuck in but the course helps with understanding the theory behind it all.
In September I'll be starting an HNC in Civil Engineering which is where my interests are focussed.
Right now though I am able to gain experience in lots of different projects ranging in size and complexity which is great.
Visiting a site is often required and one of the best parts of the job is seeing drawings come to life when you visit construction sites.
You are able to follow projects right the way through from initial design concepts to the finished build.
So far I'm amazed at how much I have learnt, and I'm only half way through my apprenticeship!"
