The Great Stink
This year marks the 150th anniversary of 'The Great Stink'.
In 1858 London was dying, literally poisoning itself on its own filth. Londoners poured their household waste into the rivers running down into the Thames and it became a stinking mire.
In 1858 the stink became so bad that the Houses of Parliament had to be evacuated and the members of Her Majesty's Parliament finally agreed that whatever the cost - something had to be done.
The Victorians employed Sir Joseph Bazalgette to build London's sewer system, the benefits this brought the city have ranked it among the greatest achievements of any British engineer. It can be argued that the completion of the sewer system had a benefit to the health of Londoners second only to the discovery of penicillin.
In 2008, we stand at the beginning of a new era, where we can finally take the final steps to complete these works begun so long ago. Our plan to build the Thames Tideway Tunnel will see the final inadequacies of this brilliant, but limited, sewer system finally laid to rest.
