Factors that may impact your bill
If your metered bill seems unusually high, please consider the points below:
- Was your old bill based on an estimated reading? If your previous estimate was too low, your current bill may include additional costs from previous bills.
- Does your current bill cover a longer period of time than your old bill?
- Have more people moved into the property, or have you had visitors staying?
- Have you had any water related problems, such as a dripping tap or washing machine flood?
- Has any building, renovation, or decorating taken place?
- Have you used your washing machine more frequently recently?
- Have you been using a hosepipe or sprinkler? Using a hosepipe for just one hour is equivalent to three days average consumption.
- Is there a leak on your private supply pipe?
How do I check for a leak?
If you cannot identify any factors that may have increased your water consumption, you may have a leak.
If there is a leak on your supply pipe, it is your responsibility to repair it as soon as possible.

I can't read my meter
If you can't read your meter and would like to request a reading, please call our customer centre on 0845 9200 888 (Minicom 0845 7200 898).
If your meter is condensed, making it difficult to read, gently tap it or wait for the temperature to rise.
As the meter box is at ground level, it can flood with rainwater. You can empty this yourself or wait for the box to drain.
